Artist Ryszard Semko in front of his painting.
I selected for this show several unique pieces from a series of my latest Monotype prints. The technique I used to create those prints is my own way of applying oil base etching ink on paper. Traditionally the single image is created on plate then press printed on paper. I broke this tradition by applying ink on rollers and printing single images on paper.
My professor in the University of Fine Arts in Poznan, Poland wasn’t happy watching me “messing” with ink in his traditional printing studio. But when I presented them in the final exam as a completed series of “dream‐like landscapes,” they became sensational and I started my individual program under the same professor. The whole process of creating my monotypes takes many attempts until the final short series of few pieces are selected. Every single selected print is a provocation and forces the viewer to use their imagination and envision dream‐like landscapes due to the extremely rich textures. The response to most of my prints is extraordinary. Viewers see faces, figures, animals and so on.
My art is in private collections in the USA, Poland, Germany, Canada, England, France, Greece, Australia, Israel, Japan, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Holland, Finland, Austria, Switzerland, Luxemburg and Egypt.
I was born and educated in Poland and have a BFA from the University of Fine Arts in Poznan. In 1986 I escaped from Poland to Greece during martial law and eventually settled in New York City, where I have lived my entire life.
